Interferometric estimation of three-dimensional ice-flow using ascending and descending passes

چکیده
Satellite radar interferometry (SRI) provides an important new tool for determining ice-flow velocity. Interferometric measurements made from a single-track direction are sensitive only to a single component of the three-component velocity vector. Observations from along three different track directions would allow the full velocity vector to be determined. A north/south-looking synthetic aperture radar (SAR) could provide these observations over large portions of the globe, but not over large areas of the polar ice sheets. We develop and demonstrate a technique that allows the three-component velocity vector to be estimated from data acquired along two track directions (ascending and descending) under a surfaceparallel flow assumption. This technique requires that we have accurate estimates of the surface slope, which we also determined interferometrically. To demonstrate the technique, we estimate the three-component velocity field for the Ryder Glacier, Greenland. Our results are promising, although we do not have yet ground-truth data with which to determine the accuracy of our estimates.

Interferometric Imaging Radar for Space Situational Awareness Satellite Characterisation
The three-dimensional imaging of satellites from a groundbased radar is considered in a space situational awareness context. Utilizing the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomographic formulation and a model of the collection geometry in a specific low Earth orbit scenario, the shape and repeat nature of collection passes from ascending and descending orbits is evaluated and constraints on the fo...
متن کاملGlacier Surface Velocity Retrieval Using D-InSAR and Offset Tracking Techniques Applied to Ascending and Descending Passes of Sentinel-1 Data for Southern Ellesmere Ice Caps, Canadian Arctic
The Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) acquisition mode of the Sentinel-1 mission provides a wide coverage per acquisition with resolutions of 5 m in range and 20 m in azimuth, which makes this acquisition mode attractive for glacier velocity monitoring. Here, we retrieve surface velocities from the southern Ellesmere Island ice caps (Canadian Arctic) using both offset tracking and...
متن کاملIce velocity determined using conventional and multiple- aperture InSAR
We combine conventional Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Multiple Aperture InSAR (MAI) to determine the ice surface velocity on the Langjokull and Hofsjokull ice caps in Iceland in 1994. This approach allows the 20 principal ice cap outlets to be fully resolved. We show that MAI leads to displacement estimates of finer resolution (15 versus 150 m) and superior precision (5 v...
متن کاملMixed convection study in a ventilated square cavity using nanofluids
This work indicates a numerical study on the laminar heat transfer mixed convection in a square cavity with two openings (an inlet and an outlet) on vertical walls through which nanofluid flows. Two flow directions are examined: i) ascending flow which enters the bottom opening and exits the upper opening; ii) descending flow which enters the upper opening and exits the bottom opening. The asce...
متن کاملIce Motion and Topography in the Siachen Glacier Area, Central Kashmir, derived with an operational processing system for INSAR-DEMs
Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram is one of the largest (> 70 km long) and highest glaciers outside the polar regions. The glacier’s near-tropical location makes it an interesting target for glaciological and climatological studies. In this paper we use two pairs of interferograms from ascending and descending ERS-1/2 tandem passes to separate surface motion and topography of Siachen Glacier. A ...
